The license plate illumination lens is a small plastic or glass cover usually located on the tailgate or trunk of a car, above the license plate. It serves to protect the bulb that illuminates the plate, and allows the light to be directed so that the plate number is clearly visible, particularly at night or in low-light conditions.
The lens directs the light from the bulb onto the plate so that it can be read. In many countries, it is a legal requirement that the license plate be illuminated at night.
It protects the bulb from weather, dirt and impact, prolonging its life.
The lens also ensures a neat, aesthetic finish, while contributing to safety by ensuring good visibility of the plate.
In the event of impact, the lens may crack or break, compromising the illumination of the plate.
Over time, plastic lenses can become tarnished or scratched, reducing their effectiveness in directing light.
If the lens is damaged, or if the plate illumination no longer works, it's important to replace it quickly to avoid fines associated with an illegible license plate.
