1974 - 1983
Appeared in 1974, the VW Golf has the difficult task of succeeding the emblematic model of Volkswagen and its 21 million copies produced: the Beetle. This new city car is radically different both from the point of view of design and its mechanics: sharp lines, front-wheel drive and 1.1l or 1.5l water-cooled engines, this time placed under the front bonnet.
Its success is not long in coming and propels Volkswagen into the modern era. The success of the Golf is supported by the appearance of the GTI version, marketed in France in October 1976 and driven by a valiant 1.6l 110hp engine with K-Jetronic mechanical injection from Audi. This version will represent almost a quarter of orders in France.
Volkswagen switched to Diesel in 1977 with its Golf D. The range then expanded with the appearance of the Golf convertible in 1979 and the pick-up named Caddy at the end of 1982. The Golf 1 sedan was withdrawn in 1983 after more than 6.5 million units sold! The Caddy and the Cabriolet will continue their journey in Europe until 1992.
