1969 - 1994
During these 25 years of marketing, four versions were introduced: C1 from 1969 to 1976, C2 from 1976 to 1982, C3 from 1982 to 1991, and finally Audi 100 C4 from 1990 to 1994. The Audi 100 C1 was introduced in 1969 in its sedan version and was equipped with three engines of 1.8 liters with 80, 90, and 100 horsepower. The following year, a Coupe version was introduced, along with a new 1.9-liter 4-cylinder engine with 115 horsepower, which also powered the GL version of the sedan.
From 1976, the Audi 100 C2 made its debut, and Audi displayed its ambitions to compete with the Mercedes-Benz W123 and BMW 5 Series E12. Already in 1977, two new body styles were introduced: an Avant version with a hatchback and a 2-door version called Coach, not Coupe. A new 5-cylinder engine with 115 horsepower was also added to the lineup.
In 1979, the Audi 100 underwent a minor facelift, especially to the headlights and interior. In 1981, a CS version was unveiled, notable for its spoiler, alloy wheels, and 5-speed gearbox, considered more economical. The third version of the Audi 100 was introduced in October 1982 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It marked a turning point in the model's history with its more aerodynamic design, higher level of equipment, and the introduction of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. This Audi 100 C3 was available in five engine options, including three petrol engines ranging from 75 hp to 136 hp and two diesel engines with 70 hp and 87 hp. The Avant version (station wagon) was officially introduced in 1983. In 1988, the Audi 100 C3 received a facelift, and the following year, a special sports edition was presented for the first time.
This highly equipped series featured Quattro all-wheel drive coupled with the 2.2-liter turbo, 2.3-liter, and 2.5-liter TDi engines. The final Audi 100 was introduced in 1990, while its predecessor was still on the market. Technically more advanced and more powerful (V6 with 174 hp), the sporty version remained available, this time equipped with the 2.2-liter engine developing 230 hp. It was redesigned in 1995 and took on a new name, which we still know today as the A6. Its career ended two years later.
