He began his professional career at the age of 26 in a small machine factory, which he purchased three years later. Since then, the company has continued to diversify, and in 1919, the automobile division was established. After a successful history, the company faced difficulties in the early 1990s, with the development of the Favorit model depleting its finances. In August of the same year, two buyers were in competition: Renault and Volkswagen. Ultimately, Volkswagen emerged as the winner. Skoda became the fourth brand of the German group on April 16, 1991, securing the future of the manufacturer and providing access to Volkswagen parts and technology. In 1994, the first Skoda model under the Volkswagen era was introduced: the Felicia, which borrowed its name from the 1959 roadster. Although it was merely a facelift of the Favorit model from the 1980s, its manufacturing quality improved.
In 1996, the Octavia model, based on the Golf platform, made its debut and found success due to its excellent price-to-feature ratio. The Fabia replaced the Felicia in 1999, surpassing 10,000 units sold in France for the first time in the same year. The brand's design continuously evolved with the goal of shedding the image of budget cars. In 2001, the range expanded with the Superb, aiming to be a sedan with the interior space of a limousine. In 2006, Skoda introduced a compact van with the name Roomster, bearing resemblance to a utility vehicle.
To fill a gap in the SUV segment, a crossover named Yeti was marketed directly in competition with the Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Kuga, Peugeot 3008, and Renault Koleos. The millionth vehicle sold in a year was surpassed for the first time in 2014. In 2017, the 15 millionth vehicle was sold, and production figures doubled between 2008 and 2018.
